The Exeter Township Police Department is bringing back its Citizen’s Police Academy after a five-year hiatus.
The five-week academy starts today and continues every Tuesday through Nov. 2 at the township building. About 25 people have registered, police Chief Christopher L. Neidert said.
The police department had stopped hosting the academy in 2005 to focus on other community policing activities such as National Night Out, K-9 demonstrations and fingerprinting, Neidert said.
The chief also wanted time to re-evaluate the academy, he said.

“We want you to be the eyes and ears for us in the community,” began Patrolman Penny Keller-Clark, as the Ada Police Department began classes last week for their Citizens Police Academy.
Keller-Clark, who has been working part-time for the Ada PD for 21 years, is also the village Zoning Inspector, a Sergeant with the security department at St. Rita’s Medical Center, and an instructor with the Police Academy at Rhodes State College. The Southaven Police Department announced this week that it is accepting applications for its 9th Annual Citizens Police Academy.
The 12-week academy is set for 6:30 p.m. Mondays, beginning Feb. 22, at the department on Northwest Drive adjacent to the M.R. Davis Public Library and City Hall.
Classes will be taught primarily by Southaven police officers but also officers from other area law enforcement agencies and include topics such as patrol operations, communications, investigations, SWAT, K9, traffic, search and rescue, the DeSoto County Jail and narcotics.

Applications are now being accepted for Fairfield Township’s Citizens Police Academy, which is tentatively scheduled to begin Jan. 19.
“It’s a chance for the residents and people who work in the township to see how their police department operates,” said Michael Oler, commander of the academy. “The news story side of what happens that you see on TV sometimes isn’t the full picture. Going through the academy will give a more balance view of what really goes on.”
