Local middle school students have a chance to learn about law enforcement from Danville’s finest as part of the annual Junior Citizen’s Police Academy.
The classes, which begin on March 25, run for five consecutive weeks, culminating with a graduation ceremony in council chambers at the Danville Municipal Building.
This year’s class will be sponsored by the Danville Police Department and the Danville Police Association PB & PA Unit 11.

For some citizens, the Great Recession may have made earning extra money more important than learning about law enforcement and the day-to-day reality that officers face on the job.
However, giving people a close look at crime fighting through free citizens’ police academies is an offer that the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies are hoping economy-minded residents won’t refuse.

The citizens’ police academy is opening its doors once again to Plymouth residents who’d like to know how their police force works from the inside out.
This is the 12th time the class has been offered by the police department, and the first since 2009.
The academy is open to all Plymouth residents and teaches students how each subsection of the force works.
Sgt. Marc Manfredi said it’s a great opportunity for residents to find out what police officers do on a daily basis.

The Richmond Police Department is hosting its 20th annual Citizen Police Academy March 22 through May 24.
Sessions will be held from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the Richmond Municipal Building, 50 N. Fifth St.
The academy is free and deadline to register is March 15. Applicants must submit to a background check and an interview prior to acceptance.
Sessions include: Community policing, patrol techniques, firearms, crime scene investigation, emergency operations center, bike patrol, traffic division and prescription drug abuse.

A few positions remain for the 201 1 Citizens’ Police Academy.
The Mason City Police Department and Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Department will accept applications through Friday.
The 2011 class is scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. every Thursday beginning  March 17. The academy will last 10 weeks.
It is open to those age 21 or older who live or work in Cerro Gordo County. There is no cost to participate.

The Eureka Police Department has developed a citizen’s police academy.
The EPD press release announcing the academy says it was created to forge a stronger partnership between citizens and the police department by educating the community in law enforcement issues and police department policies and procedures. The academy is also a means for participants and police personnel to share information and ideas about the police profession.

The Newtown Police Department is offering a Citizen’s Police Academy in 10 Thursday sessions, March 24 to May 26 from 6 to 9 p.m., in different town-owned facilities.
The free program provides local residents and business owners, who are at least 18, a firsthand view of law enforcement functions and the criminal justice system.
The program will include a tour of the police station, and topics such as the hiring process, field training, patrol operations, crime prevention services, crime scene and finger printing, and an overview of various laws.

Applications are being accepted for the next Citizens Police Academy sponsored by the Sandwich Police Department, Lt. David Guillemette said in an e-mail.
The 13-week session is open to any resident or business owner in Sandwich 18 years old or older. Topics covered will include criminal law, constitutional law, use of force, patrol procedures and firearms safety.
