They’re known as the class that almost wasn’t. At least that’s how it seemed for the week Mayor Michael Bloomberg deferred hiring the latest batch of New York City Police Department recruits because of uncertainty about funding. But by mid-June, 275 men and women were hitting the policy academy gym as well as the books.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly on December 16 announced the start of construction on a 21st century police academy to train the next generation of New York’s Finest. The new NYPD Police Academy, located in College Point at the former NYPD auto pound, will consolidate training facilities for civilians, recruits and active police officers that are currently spread out across the city into one state-of-the-art campus. It seems that training is the always the first thing that is effected in Police Work when budget cuts start to effect a Police Department.
The New York City Police Department plans to cancel a 2010 police NYPD Police Academy Class because of budget cuts.
At a City Council public safety committee meeting Tuesday, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said that there will be no police academy next January to meet the city’s mandate that the department decrease their ranks by 1,000 officers.
