Citizens Police Academy accepting applications
Class 27 of the Frisco Citizen’s Police Academy will begin Feb. 11. The program is currently accepting applications and urges interested people to apply as soon as possible, as they receive more applications than there are available seats each year.
The Frisco Citizen’s Police Academy (CPA) educates citizens who live or work in Frisco about the police department and its divisions and practices.
Participants of the CPA program get first-hand exposure to the police department, its personnel and equipment, and are able to put themselves in officers’ shoes each Thursday night class is in session. Instructors for each week’s topics are officers and employees of the Frisco Police Department who provide both classroom and hands-on lecture and instruction.
Anyone interested in applying for the Frisco CPA should fill out an application and fax it to the Frisco Police Department’s Community Services Division at 972-292-6076 or drop it off in person at the Frisco Police Department. The Frisco Police Department and City Jail is located at 7200 Stonebrook Parkway. The police department’s main offices are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday..
Due to the popularity of this program, organizers strongly encourage early registration due to a limited class size. Once an application has been reviewed and processed, the applicant’s name will be placed on a list for the next available class.
The Frisco CPA meets every Thursday for 10 weeks, plus one Saturday at the firing range. Optional training for the Frisco Citizens On Patrol (COP) program is also available for CPA graduates.
The CPA is offered twice each year (one session in the fall and the other in the spring). The program has recently been restructured to involve more hands-on activities, such as actual crime scene processing, hand-to-hand defensive tactics, firearms, high-risk traffic stops, pursuit driving, and much more.
Although each member is encouraged to take part in the scenarios, participation is optional and any member may choose to be a spectator in any portion of the CPA. The purpose of the CPA is to give citizens an idea of just a few of the many day-to-day functions in the Frisco Police Department.
